Winnie the Pooh was named by author A.A. Milne for a bear named Winnipeg (Winnie for short) that he saw at the London Zoo. The bear was donated by an army captain from Winnipeg, Manitoba, who'd purchased it as a cub in 1914. bear_thumb.gif
