Full Version: A Theme Party
By Loving Hands > Party Time > Pick a Theme...
Mrs Liz
Anytime you plan on getting a group of people together is a great time to plan a party. So why not pick a theme for your next birthday, holiday, get together or even sporting even.

After you pick the theme, then comes the fun of making the invites, activities or games, goody bags or prizes, and the drinks and food.

***Here are some ideas for a poodle party for girls:

A paw-printed doghouse invitation gives the scoop on your poochy-keen bash.
As your guests arrive, pass out homemade poodle-ear headbands, and have them paint on noses and whiskers. Every glam dog needs a collar and cuffs, so let the girls decorate strips of pink felt and craft foam with jewels and pom-poms.
How about a pretty poodle purse stuffed with poodle-inspired candy favors?
Fluffy, mini-marshmallow-covered cupcakes that look like poodles are doggone delicious. As for the ears? You can make them from marshmallow candy peanuts.
You might even want have the girls wear a poodle skirt and have a sock hop with music from 50's.

***How about a paint party:

A colorful invitation covered in different colored hand-prints has fun written all over it. Sure, finger-painting makes a mess but why not have this party outside then. Preschoolers are not the only ones who will just love it! (Have oversize plastic garbage bags on hand to use as smocks.) Set up an art easel, lay out cups of paint, cups with water and paint brushes of different sizes. (A clothes line is a great way to hang up the work of art to dry, while the next artist gets to make theirs) Cover the tables with huge pieces of paper, lay out markers, crayons and chalk so the guest can decorate the table cloth to. (Great for a game of tic-tax-toe) Then let the fun begin. Cleanup time! Wrap up soaps, bubble bath, and other goodies in a hand towel for kids to take home. (Let the fun continue at home during bath time)
Use dribbles and splatters of different colored icing to transform a plain cake into a work of modern art.

***How about a pirate bash:

Create an invitation written in secret pirate's code (backwards), and instruct guests to hold it up to the mirror to read. (The invite could be put into an empty bottle with a cork onto. Tell them on the invite to come dressed up as a pirate, to find the treasure. (any old clothes will do great)
Send them on a treasure hunt with a map and a each pirate a bag, where they can find pirate stuff like - pirate hats, eye patches, and mini magnifying glasses. From the clever clues that lead them to prizes along the way.
The payoff is a treasure chest filled with all sorts of loot. (like gold chocolate coins, and little prizes)
Food or treats could be served in a bandanna tied on top. Need a little down time, why not put in a pirate movie.

These are just a few ideas, but make sure you have someone who can take lots of pictures of everyone having fun. Lets hear from you on your theme party.

How About an Earth Party!

Only once a year Arbor day and Earth Day come around, but we can keep them alive more then that. You can call your party anything you want, as long as it has something to do with giving back to the Earth. Plus this is great inside or outside, anytime of the year, and everyone of all ages will enjoy it. And if this goes over well you can do it over and over again with a different topic.

Get together and go on a nature trail walk. Make some trail mixes to take along. Have each person take a little bag with them to pick up little things like pine-cones. But never pick something that is still growing. Leave nature the way you found it. After your walk you can enjoy a picnic or even a meal back at home. Then you can show everyone what you found on the trail and how you will now use that item as a keepsake or turn it into a craft item - like a wreath.

You can even have a planting party, with indoor plants, flowers or herbs. If you plant outside vegetables you can have a second party to harvest everything. Make some hanging plant holders, or bird houses, or little plant sticks to show what item is growing. Make things to eat that will keep with the idea too with sunflower seeds, herbs, or a cake.

[attachmentid=627]

Have a recycle party. You can get together and with garbage bags set off to clean up your park, or your neighborhood, or a children's play area at their school. Not only do you get to clean up Mother Earth, you get to enjoy the outside air and get some exercise. After that why not stop at a recycling plant and drop off any cans, plastic or paper, etc. With kids along it may be fun to tour the place too. Just call ahead first. Once at home you could make some recycled paper, or Tye-dye some stuff.

bear_flower.gif What every you do it will be more fun with others, and a great reason to just get together and give something back to the Earth!

An Animal Party

A great idea for kids, a trip to the zoo or even a petting zoo can add some fun. Or how about a Pet Show, letting the kids bring over their pets to show and tell.

The invitations and the cake are easy, since you can pick any animal. [attachmentid=480] Like this Lady Bug.

You could even add to the theme by making it a costume party - dress up as an animal. You could even have each child pretend to be that animal by demonstrating how that animal would walk and talk.

Stuffed animals could be used to decorate, and even a great gift idea for your guests.

Some activity ideas:

Painting rocks - to make Pet Rocks, if you have little wiggly eyes to glue onto the rocks that will add to them too. Depending on the size of the rocks - the Pet Rock could be a pocket friend to carry around or a paperweight for their desk or a doorstop for their room.

Making a bird house, bird feeder or filling a pine-cone with peanut butter and covering it with bird seeds.

A coloring contest, everyone gets paper and crayons, then you call off an animal(s) and give them a few minutes to draw it. When the timer goes off check to see who's picture looks the best to the animal you called off. Boxes of animal treats make great prizes.

Older children can do work games, like these examples:
Give each player a plain piece of paper and pencil. Now give them 10 minutes to write down as many animals that they can. The one with the most is the winner.

Give each player a list of Jungle Animals (the list below or make up your own) and a pencil. Give them 10 minutes to unscramble the animals to get a winner for the first one to finish.

1. onli (lion)
2. neeltaph (elephant)
3. nomyek (monkey)
4. accopek (peacock)
5. lagonimf (flamingo)
6. seroorinch (rhinoceros)
7. grite (tiger)
8. areb (bear)
9. photopsuimap (hippopotamus)
10. esla (seal)
11. almla (llama)
12. riffgea (giraffe)
13. okoranga (kangaroo)
14. unpinge (penguin)

Reading an animal book could be fun.

Or how about a puppet show with animals.

If parents are OK with it, you could even give each child a little gold fish to take home as a pet. But do not just surprise the parents with them since that 10 cents you spent on the the fish will cost those parents a whole lot more to care for it. Stuffed animals might be better.

There is so much you can do with this theme to make it fun, and even adults could enjoy this.

You might even want to try and collect some items for a local animal shelter. And you might want to take a road trip to the place with the kids to show how they can help other homeless pets. bear_thumb.gif Thank you

A Western Party

Cowboys - Cowgirls - and Indians, what fun you can have when dressing up as one of these.

Western food is easy if you want to grill out or have a picnic.

A day on a farm, or going for a horseback ride.

There is a lot of country music, and a square dance could be fun.

If the party is outside, relay races are great.

A fire pit could be used to roast marshmallows to make smores or hot dogs. If someone can play the guitar, find some sing along songs.
Mrs Liz
UFO - Space Visitors - Aliens

There could be some really interesting costumes for this type of party.

A trip to the planetarium can be fun and educational.

How about some Allen movies, there are so many to pick from, like:
The old black and white classics
Johnny Five
Batteries not included
Star Track
ET

For decorations, hang white stars and planets from the celling with black lights.

You can give your guests glow sticks for extra fun.

For food - think green and slimy. Check out the Dough Aliens recipe on this site. [attachmentid=481]

SUPER HERO'S bear_thumb.gif

A great idea for those who like Comic Books.

Dress up as their favorite super hero or villain.

Have them bring their own Comic Books to share or swap.

New Comic Books would make great gifts too.
Mrs Liz
An International Party!

Make learning fun for everyone. Let's say your child is learning about a country in school, what better way then to turn it into a learning party. Get the whole family involved too.

Your invitations can ask your guests to dress up in the theme of that country, bring a dish to try, and maybe something to show and tell.

Your library can be a great way to have fun finding information and even music.

If you know someone from that country to invite they too may have stories to tell.

This could also be a great way to learn more about your own family back ground.

bear_santa.gif Wrapping paper and bows!

A cute idea for Anniversaries, Birthdays, Baby shows and even Christmas. Any type of party where gifts maybe given.

Start with the table and chairs - drape a solid colored tablecloth over your dinner table and cross with colored ribbon to give the effect that the top of the table and even the back of the chairs to look like wrapped gifts.

When setting the table, you can wrap little boxes with a tiny gift inside for each guest to be placed on their plates. Or you can make crackers, these are an old Christmas tradition in England, where the guests hold both ends of the cracker together and pull apart. Out pops small favors or treats for your guest to take home. To make one, you can use an empty tolet paper roll, wrap it with a piece of tissue papper and tie the ends with ribbons, after you stuff the surprise inside.

Tie the silverware and napkin with ribbon. You can also make a centerpiece by wrapping tiny 1 inch boxes, then place them in a circle (you can use glue to keep them together) then make another layer of boxes to go onto of those, and continue your way up until your pile of boxes looks like a tree of gifts. (hint, if you tie ribbon or yarn around them, lay the top of the box with the bow on its side to make it easier to stack). You can even make little gift boxes to be used as place cards with each guest's name. Construction paper can be used to make place matts.

You can even wrap your door to look like a big gift.

Use colored ribbon and bows to decorate stair railings, or banister, or any other places you can wrap into a gift.

bear_thumb.gif A Fondue Party!

Here is a popular '70's party idea that everyone of all ages can enjoy today. What better way is there for your guests to have fun! A real hands on type of meal where you can enjoy a cheese sauce, different meats, and finish with a sweet dessert.

So the next time your planning on a card game, or watching the football game with the guys, try out a beer fondue. Or how about a sleep over and movies, where you could have a chocolate fondue.

Stick with easy recipes for your first few outings, then feel free to experiment as you get more comfortable. There are really no hard and fast rules.

You can find different types of fondues on this site under the recipe forum and then under topic of condiments. You can also check out www.fonduerecipes.org or foodnetwork.com for more. It's so easy:

Cheese Fondue recipe
Ingredients:
8 oz. shredded cheddar cheese
8 oz. shredded emmental cheese
1 clove garlic
1 can beer
2 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon salt
a pinch of pepper
French bread, diced into cubes

Directions:
Mix together all ingredients (except the bread). Melt the mixture on the stove in a saucepan. Then place the mixture into a fondue pot for serving. Dip the cubes of bread into the melted mixture with fondue forks and enjoy eating this.

Pass the Cheese recipe
Ingredients:
1/2 Lb. Swiss cheese, shredded
1/2 Lb. Gruyere cheese, shredded
2 Tablespoons corn starch
1 cup dry white wine
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
1 Tablespoon Kirsch or other cherry brandy
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1 clove garlic, peeled
pinch of nutmeg

Directions:
Toss cheeses with corn starch to coat, you can do this in a ziplock bag. Then rub the inside of the fondue pot with garlic. Get rid of the garlic clove and heat the lemon juice and wine in the pot to a simmer. Gradually add the cheese until it's melted, then stir in the cherry brandy, mustard and nutmeg.
Hints:
Stir the cheese in a figure-8 pattern rather than the old round-and-round. This breaks it up better. And keep the mixture warm over as low a heat as possible while maintaining melt. No scorching allowed.

Dip-ables:
Cubed and toasted French and pumpernickel breads; sauteed sirloin and chicken-breast cubes; blanched potatoes, carrots, asparagus and broccoli in bite-sized pieces; cubed apples and pears.

For the Chocolate Lovers
Ingredients:
3/4 cup heavy cream
14 oz. bittersweet chocolate, chopped
2 Tablespoons amaretto
1/4 cup hazelnuts, finely chopped

Directions:
Heat 1/2 cup of cream to low boil in nonreactive saucepan over medium heat. Reserve remaining cream. Remove pan from heat, add chocolate and let stand for 3-5 minutes. Then whisk in hazelnuts and liqueur and transfer to fondue pot.

Hints: If mixture becomes too thick, add extra cream one Tablespoon at a time until desired texture is achieved.

Dip-ables:
Cubed pound cake; almond biscotti; sliced bananas, pineapple, strawberries, melon and kiwi.

Since it's always more fun when people dress up for themed events, invitations are a must for this one. Be sure to send them out with enough time for your guests to get a good idea of what they're going to wear. Encourage them to don their best '70's attire, and while it's not necessarily required, offering a few suggestions on the invites will let people know what's expected. For the guys they can check out www.dressthatman.com for ideas, but thrift stores are a great place to get some retro clothes for cheap, fun outfits.

bear_thumb.gif A Cookie Party

A cookie making party is perfect for all age groups, since everyone loves them. And who does not enjoy creating their own masterpieces — and snacking on them along the way. This is not just a fun activity for the Christmas season.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwich cookies:

You can make peanut butter, oatmeal, chocolate or sugar cookies during the party or in advance, and leave the sandwich creations to the guest. Or if using a store-bought, refrigerated cookie dough, here is another idea. You could have each guest bring a baking sheet, then give each guest a container of cookie dough to create a cookie pizza, and they can take the left overs home to enjoy after the party. This is great for those cold days when you can turn on your oven.

For those chocolate lovers, you could make Brownies, and use cookie cutters to make them special.

As for the filling or topping, there is no limit. You can even make your own peanut butter and jelly too. As for some other ideas: flavored jams, marshmallow fluff, frosting, chocolate chips, and bananas. You can even make a note on your invitation asking your guests what they would put on a peanut butter sandwich, for other ideas to have available, and let everyone choose their toppings from a candy buffet.

If you are going to use sugar cookies, prepare a decorating buffet full of cookie cutters, assorted sprinkles and candy, and icing for dipping, dotting, and painting.

If your party is in the summer you could fill your cookies with ice cream.
Here is one from Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, The Mother of All Ice Cream Sandwiches:

Ingredients -
2 pounds of chocolate chip cookie dough
2 pints of your favorite Ben & Jerry's ice cream
1 small package of M&M's

Directions -
Double your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe.

Divide the doubled recipe of dough into two equal portions and form into two large balls. Place one of the dough balls between two pieces of parchment or wax paper. Slightly flatten the dough ball by pressing down with the palm of your hand; then roll out as you roll to retain the round, cookie shape. Carefully transfer the dough to a large baking sheet. Repeat with the second dough ball and transfer to a second baking sheet. Follow the recipe's baking instructions. At the point when the cookies are removed from the oven and are still warm and quite soft, decorate one of the two cookies with the M&M's by pressing them gently into the top of the cookie.

While the giant cookies are cooling, temper two pints of your favorite Ben & Jerry's ice cream so that the ice cream is soft enough to spread, but not runny. Once the cookies have thoroughly cooled, turn the undecorated cookie, top side down, onto a serving platter or cake plate. Spoon on the ice cream and spread it evenly over the cookie's surface to within a half inch of the edge. Place the decorated cookie on top and press down lightly. At this point it is good to put the cookie sandwich into the freezer for at least a half hour or more to firm u the ice cream prior to slicing into wedges. For ease of slicing, use a large serrated knife.

Another idea would be graham crackers, these can be fun to fill or frost and decorate. A great outside camp fire treat would be a favorite of most people - the smore's.

For the extra creative you could make stained glass cookies. The recipe is on this site.

Don't forget the milk to serve with your cookies. bear_thumb.gif

Note: for those small children you might even want to have a Cookie Monster story to read to them.

bear_blink.gif Fun under the Stars Party!

Plan on a backyard campout for adults, teens, kids or everyone. There's nothing like chasing fireflies, telling stories, cooking out, and checking out the stars to find the big dipper.

Your backyard party will have that one extra plus (indoor plumbing). As safe place for little kids or even pets too.

So get out the camping gear and make a list of items you might need to ask other parents to bring. Then figure out how many will be able to sleep under the stars in your backyard before you send out your invites. If it turns out to be a hit, you or someone else might want to have another party next month.

Half the fun is letting everyone get into the act of putting up the tents and setting up their sleeping bags. If permitted, you may want to make a campfire. A grill will do for cooking but make sure it is out before going to sleep. A good time to teach fire safety to children, and remember to have a bucket of water near by the fire, just in case it is better to be prepared.

If you have a very quiet back yard, you could pick up a few crickets from any pet store for a dollar. Just before bed, you can let them go free.

No campout would be complete without those good grilled items: like baked potatoes, corn on the cob, hotdogs, hamburgers, and smores. Lots of great recipes are listed on this site for you.

Now for the real fun, games and these do not require a TV and controls. A couple of burlap bags for some relay races. Balls, and freesbies for tossing around or even a net for volleyball. What about those old games like horseshoes, duck-duck goose, kick the can, tug a war, red light green light, hide and go seek, the kind of games everyone can play, and don't forget the hot potato game. If the weather is nice and hot a balloon fight can be great fun. Add some music to the fun with silly sing along songs.

The last thing you will need is a scary store you can find at your library, or if your group is old enough, you only need to start a story and let each person take a turn to add something scary to the story.

bear_thumb.gif Good luck on your party!

Tip: you might want to have a first aid kit handy, just incase someone falls.
Mrs Liz
Big Hollywood Night!

Everyone has a favorite actor or Movie, so why not make it a winning party with the stars. Now you might not get a real Oscar winner to show up to your party, but you can ask your guests to dress up as a famous movie star, and make them the star of the show.

Pick a movie theme, where everyone can dress up as monsters, villians, hero's, action, sports, musical, and the list goes on.

Then you will need to set the mood, you could pretend that all the stars will be going to the opening of a movie, or going to an award red-carpet event.

Set the tone by laying a red carpet and some rope at the front of your door.

Then have one or two photographers around to take pictures or a camra person to interview each guest. Turn it into a paparazzi entance.

Once inside you could have something set up for the food area that might look like the inside of a theater's concession stand. Popcorn, soda, and boxes of candy are just a few treats to have.

You can even set up a room with seats where everyone will sit to watch the show, or play charades with different movies in a hat to pick.

Or maybe set it up as the after party of the awards, and have waiters carry trays around with drinks and snacks for them to enjoy. Make a golden delicious drink to be served, one shot of Goldschlager per one cup of sparkling cider. The real gold flakes are safe to drink and will make your drink real glitzy.

You might even want to give out awards, for best outfit, best hair, best make-up and so on. And what is an award without an acceptance speech! (a very brief one)

Depending on your computer skills, you might even be able to make a slide show of your guests best shots and use them for the guests to vote on.

When it comes to food make that fun too, you could have lots of little rich looking finger food. Or go with a potluck, but challenge your guests to pair their offering with their outfit, or their actors favorite foor, or your movie theme. You could even have them vote on the food for prizes, best taste, best presentation, best theme match.

Everyone likes some type of pizza, so why not have a pizza party!

There is a recipe on this site you can use to make your own pizza crust:
Pizza Dough for Pizza Party

What ever age, everyone loves to make their own special pizza. So set up one or more tables in a row, and set out your bowls in a row. Cut up all your toppings, and cook up all the meats you will have to fill your bowls. Include your cheese(s) and any other extras you can think of. Then let the fun start.

Have some large ziplock bags ready for your guests to take home any of their pizza they do not finish.

For a kids party, you can even go to the store and pick a game called Pizza Party (it's fun).

You can even make your invites look like a piece of pizza.
Mrs Liz
Throwing an Asian-themed party.

A taste of the Orient. A perfect way to have some fun with new exotic foods and learning how to use chopsticks. So get your wok out, and get some tea, then find some recipes to try. Have your guests try to make origami figures.

Here is a site: www.pearlriver.com
If you are looking for Chinese items, like tea, kitchen supplies, lanterns, paper garlands, parasols and origami paper, or brocade (beautiful fabric).

Or check out: www.cherryblossomgardens.com
For clothing, gifts, dishes, home decor, and party supplies.

Story Book Time!

What better way to get your kids to enjoy reading.

You could have each child can dress up to match thier farvorit book, and have them bring the book along to read out load.

You could pick the story, like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, or Winnie the Pooh and have each child dress up to those characters. Some stories even have movies that you could also play during the party. With all the characters to your book, you might want to have them put on a little play as you read the book.

You could have a book swap, where each child brings 3 books they no longer want. Then when the kids get there, have them put the books on the table. Later have each child pick two new books for them to take home from the books on the table. With the books left over have them donated to a local shelter.

As party gifts, you could give each child a new book.

For a craft project, have the children make bookmarkers.

You might even want to have a puppet show.

When serving treats, try to have them relate to the book; like honey cookies for Winnie the Pooh, and carrots for Rabbit.

Even adults like to have fun - and enjoy reading. You could have an Alice in Wonderland Tea Party for them. Or maybe share poems.

For the teens you could have a Twilight party.
Mrs Liz
Hats and T-shirts! bear_original.gif

Get out the glue guns, paints, and other craft items you can use to decorate with. Then think of your guests and what they would wear; a baseball hat, or a fancy hat for dressing up, or a straw hat for gardening. If they are not into hats, you could use t-shirts for play time or nap time. Maybe fun in the kitchen with a new apron, or a cloth bag to use when shopping.

Now your ready to plan your party around your art theme. Just make sure if you use t-shirts that you have the right size for your guests.
