bear_flower.gif Once a year the calendar tells us it's time to wish our Mothers well. A time to say: Thank you Mom and I love you.

This should be something we do every day, or as often as we can. But on this day we all make time out of our busy lives to really show her why: we are so thankful that she is our Mom, and why we love her so much.

This is the day to tell the whole world that we are proud to call this special woman our Mom. So take time and really think of all the wonderful things she has done for you in the past. These are the stories you will want to share with her this day.

This is the time to ask yourself, what would she like? You should know her favorite colors, and what flowers and what candy or treat she likes, I know she will know yours! What will make her happy, something she would not do or buy for herself, since she will always put your needs a head of hers.

This is the day to give to your Mom a piece of your heart that she will treasure and remember always. So what will you do for your Mom this Mother's Day? bear_wub.gif

This is a truly BEAUTIFUL piece. For those lucky to still be blessed with your Mom, this is beautiful. For those of us who aren't, this is even more beautiful.

For those who are moms, you'll love this.

The young mother set her foot on the path of life. "Is this the long way?" she asked. And the guide said: "Yes, and the way is hard. And you will be old before you reach the end of it.. But the end will be better than the beginning."

But the young mother was happy, and she would not believe that anything could be better than these years. So she played with her children, and gathered flowers for them along the way, and bathed them in the clear streams; and the sun shone on them, and the young Mother cried,"Nothing will ever be lovelier than this."

Then the night came, and the storm, and the path was dark, and the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother drew them close and covered them with her mantle, and the children said, "Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near, and no harm can come."

And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead, and the children climbed and grew weary, and the mother was weary. But at all times she said to the children," A little patience and we are there."

So the children climbed, and when they reached the top they said, "Mother, we would not have done it without you."

And the mother, when she lay down at night looked up at the stars and said, "This is a better day than the last, for my children have learned fortitude in the face of hardness. Yesterday I gave them courage. Today, I've given them strength."

And the next day came strange clouds which darkened the earth, clouds of war and hate and evil, and the children groped and stumbled, and the mother said: "Look up. Lift your eyes to the light.

"And the children looked and saw above the clouds an everlasting glory, and it guided them beyond the darkness. And that night the Mother said, "This is the best day of all, for I have shown my children God."

And the days went on, and the weeks and the months and the years, and the mother grew old and she was little and bent. But her children were tall and strong, and walked with courage. And when the way was rough, they lifted her, for she was as light as a feather; and at last they came to a hill, and beyond they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide.

And mother said, "I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know the end is better than the beginning, for my children can walk alone, and their children after them."

And the children said, "You will always walk with us, Mother, even when you have gone through the gates." And they stood and watched her as she went on alone, and the gates closed after her. And they said: "We cannot see her but she is with us still. A Mother like ours is more than a memory. She is a living presence......."

Your Mother is always with you.... She's the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street; she's the smell of bleach in your freshly laundered socks; she's the cool hand on your brow when you're not well. Your Mother lives inside your laughter. And she's crystallized in every tear drop.

She's the place you came from, your first home; and she's the map you follow with every step you take. She's your first love and your first heartbreak, and nothing on earth can separate you.

Not time, not space... not even death! bear_original.gif

bear_flower.gif The history of Mother's Day, by: Samm Erickson

Despite what some mght say, celebrating mothers is not a recent invention of the greeting card industry. In fact, tributes to mothers have been made across cultures throughout history. Mother's Day celebrations typically take place in the spring, associating mothers with a return to life and virility, and have always been closely associated with religion and spirituality. The ancient Greeks celebrated Rhea, the mother of the gods, and the ancient Romans celebrated Cybele, a mother goddess. The celebration of Mother's Day began in England in the 17th centry.

In the 1600's England celebrated mothers during Mothering Sunday. The holiday took place on the fourth Sunday of Lent and was established to honor the mothers of England. Servants were given the day off and encouraged to return to their homes to spend the day with their mothers. As Christianity spread, the honor applied to mothers was extened to the Mother Church. Over time, these festivals blended and both the church and mothers were celebrated.

Offical Mother's Day celebrations in America started about 150 years ago. In the middle of the 1800's, there was little recognition of the condition of women in the United States. They were not allowed to vote and many lived under tyrannical rule. To combat this, a homemaker named Anna Jarvis organized a day to raise awareness about the plight of women. When Jarvis died in 1905, her daughter, also named Anna, began to orgaize and campaign in order to emorialize the work and the life of her mother. Jarvis lobbied businessman and presidents, including Taft and Roosevelt. One of the first orgained services tool place in 1908 at Jarvis' church in West Virginia. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother's Day as a national holiday.

Anna Jarvis' favorite flower was the white carnation and it was tradition to give carnations as a present. In time, the tradition evolved into more elaborate gifts, cards and flower arrangements and many became concerned with the increasing commercialism of Mother's Day, including Jarvis. Believing that the sentiment was corrupted by the increasing serarch for profit, Jarvis is said to have confessed that she wished she had never started the day.

The standing of women has come a long way since the day of Anna Jarvis. Mother's Day is now celebrated across the globe, with many countries marking the second Sunday of May a national holiday. Mothering is a diverse and complicated task, and modern celebrations have come to be just as diverse. When you celebrate Mother's Day year, know that you are part of a longstanding internation tradition to honor the devotion and kindness of mothers. It is only appropriate to recognize the contributions of so may.

Ideas for her - Mom, new moms, grand-mothers, step-mothers, adopted or foster moms

Donate something to a women's shelter, a pregnancy support center, a childrens hospital, you can even have a little engraved plack added to it with your mothers name on it.

Make a Memory Jar - Find a jar that you can decorate. Then get creative with little pieces of (color) paper that you will write down your memories you've had with your mother that mean something to you. Put these recollections into the jar, and then wrap it up. Now you have a gift that mom can enjoy every day as she pulls out a slip of paper and reflex on your wonderful memories of her.

Scrapbooks - Check and see if mom has been collecting photos, clippings, art work, cards or other memories in a box that she has not had time to do anything with. Put together a scrapbook for her and then when you sit down together, have her explain it to you as she goes through each page. (You might want to have a box of kleenex handy.)

Take time to plant something together - the memories will continue to grow to as you water the plant.
