The egg timer is ticking! We have a challenge that just may seem impossible. You are going to build a container that will safely protect your egg when it's dropped from an extraordinary height.
A. Rules
Your mission is to transport a raw, uncooked egg, from the height of 8 feet to the ground, in one piece. There are a few rules described below but your creativity is the key!
B. Design of Container:
• Container dimensions must not exceed 1 foot x 1 foot x 1 foot.
• The following materials will be provided on drop day to make your containers out of. NO other items can be used. If you run out of these items, ruin them or lose them, then you won't be given any other items.
o 30 Straws
o 1 meter of duct tape
o 1 meter of string
o 10 rubber bands
o 1 zip-lock sandwich bag
o 1 small kitchen garbage bag
o 1 meter of masking tape
• You will have exactly 30 minutes to get your container together.
C. Drop Procedure:
• You can have an adult be the egg dropper. Set up a ladder that an adult can stand on or from a porch or any place safe you can drop an egg from that is at least 8 feet high. Place a plastic bag below that the egg can be dropped on just in case the egg should break and make a mess.
• You will need a raw egg to be dropped. You can play this twice if you test it with a hard boiled egg the first time, and a raw egg the next. (Great idea for those colored Easter eggs)
• A broken egg is defined as one that is visibly leaking its contents. Hairline fractures are considered cracks.
• The contestant will be required to remove the egg from the container to show that the egg is not cracked. Provide winners with a treat or little reward.
This can be fun at parties, for Scouting, and in class. You can have each person do it or in teams, this was even done with a team of adults.
Good luck with your egg. Have some fun, if you have pictures send them to us, or let us know how it went. My egg made a safe landing.
