* Store a kitchen fire extinguisher nearby—never use water to put out a grease fire.

* Place a smoke detector in, or in close proximity to, the kitchen, and test the battery on a monthly basis.

* Prevent slipping by placing a non-skid mat in front of the kitchen sink.

* Keep electrical cords untangled, take care not to overload sockets and use a surge protector.

* Turn all pot handles away from the front of the stove to prevent spills.

* Wear shoes, protect bare feet from the oops that will fall to the floor.

* Keep a first-aid kit handy and stock it with bandages, scissors, tape and anti-bacterial ointment.
