Ingredients ::
  • 3 Tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 pounds boneless round steak, cut in 1/2 inch cubes
  • 2 Tablespoons cooking oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 Tablespoon dried minced onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed
  • 2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms
  • 2 cups frozen peas, thawed
  • 3 cups mashed potatoes (with milk and butter)
  • 1 Tablespoon butter OR margarine, melted
  • paprika to taste

Makes: 6 to 8 servings

In a large resealable plastic bag, combine the flour, salt and pepper; and add the beef cubes and shake to coat.

In a skillet over a medium heat, brown the beef in oil.

Place the beef and drippings into a greased shallow 2-1/2 quart baking dish.

To the skillet add water, broth, garlic, onion, thyme and rosemary; bring to a boil. Simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes. Stir in the mushrooms. Pour over the meat; then mix well.

Cover and bake in a 350 degree oven for 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 hours OR until the beef if tender.

Sprinkle peas over the meat.

Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the peas.

Brush the top with the butter and sprinkle with paprika.

Bake for 15 to 20 minutes more.
