Ingredients ::
  • Filling:
  • 5 cups fresh OR frozen pitted cherries
  • 3/4 cup dried cherries
  • 1-1/4 cups sugar
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • milk
  • sugar OR decorator's sugar
  • No-Fail Pie Crust:
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • pinch of salt

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

In a bowl, combine both cherries, sugar, flour and nutmeg; let sit for at least 15 minutes.

Make the pie crust - in another bowl, combine the salt, flour and shortening until crumbly. Add milk and stir lightly until moist. Roll out for pie.

Makes 4 thin crusts OR 3 thicker ones.

Place cherries in the unbaked pie crust and cover with lattice crust.

Brush the crust with enough milk, then sprinkle with the sugar before baking.

Place foil around the crust edge and bake in the oven for 30 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake for another 25 to 30 minutes longer, until bubbly.

Serve hot or cold, and with or without ice cream and whip cream.
