Ingredients ::
  • 12 egg whites
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 2 teaspoons vinegar
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
Description ::
From: Karen Walden, owner of the Walden Restaurant, in West Bend, WI

In a bowl, beat the eggs, salt, cream of tartar and vinegar till foamy.

Add 1 cup of sugar, and beat for 10 minutes.

Add another cup of sugar, beat 10 minutes.

Repeat with the last cup of sugar, and beat 10 minutes.

Add the vanilla and beat into the mixture.

Line a large pan (12 inch round by 3 inch deep works best)with tin foil. If you do not have one, try a big metal bowl, or a 9 x 13 inch pan, and it will poof up considerably. You could also divide the batter and bake in batches, but you will have to adjust the baking time.

Add batter to the pan and bake at 275 degrees to 305 degrees, depending on oven, for 1-1/2 hours.

Cool.

Top with sugared strawberries, whipped cream and ice cream, to serve.
