Everyone likes balloons!

But what happens to those balloons that get lost into the sky? They will go up and up until you can not see them any more, but they will come back down once the helium is lost.

This can be a problem - when these mylar balloons come back down they could get caught in the electric power lines, and cause the power to go out for many people.

Another issue is a problem for wildlife, when the balloons end up in the lakes, rivers, streams and ocean. Here the animals can eat them, and get stuck in their system where they could stop breathing or starve to death.

So what can you do?

Try NOT to let go of your helium balloons, tie them to your wrist, a wristwatch, shoe, belt hoop, or something else so it will not be able to fly away.

When your finished with the balloon, take a pin to it to let out all the air, then make sure it gets put into the garbage. DO NOT leave them on the ground for animals or even your pets to find and eat.

If your school, church, or other party has plans to let lots of balloons go into the air during a celebration STOP them, and tell them about the dangers to sea animals. Most people don't realize that creatures can be harmed by those pretty balloons. bear_thumb.gif
