On my honor I will do my best

To do my duty to God and my country

and to obey the Scout Law;

To help other people at all times;

To keep myself physically strong,

mentally awake, and morally straight

United Way and Boy Scouts make a difference -
written by Karin Westerlund, United Way community Impact Coordinator

It takes good organization, follow-thru, and leadership skills to conduct a three day soccer camp for over 80 boys and girls agesfour to six years old. This is even more impressive when it is done by a 15 year old Boy Scout who also used the soccer camp event to raise over $1,600 toward a Special Olympics program he was also involved in.

"Brett" (whose name was changed to protect his privacy) is no average 15 year old. Not only is he an Eagle Scout and a leader in his Boy Scout troop, he is also an outstanding soccer player for his high school team and part of an elite traveling soccer club that competes across the nation. With the help of over 20 other players and coaches from different teams as well as some of his more athletic Scout friends, "Brett" organized and ran the one-hour every evening, three-day socce camp. "Bret" is a great example of how the Boy Scouts help young people develop important life skills and understand the importance of giving back to the community by helping those younger than themselves and youth with disabilities. bear_thumb.gif

Congratulations to the Boy Scouts of America for celebrating their 100 anniversary this year. Your support of the United Way of Washington County provides funding to Comprehensive Youth Development, a core program offered by the Bay-Lakes Council of the Boy Scouts of America. A program that makes a difference in lives of young people in Washington County, WI.

The donations raised during this year's campaign will be used to fund 34 programs offered by 21 United Way partner agencies that provide services to Washington County residents, here at home when it matters most.
