Saving the Plants and Animals

Introduction
Because humans are the smartest creatures on Earth, we do pretty much what we want. If we decide to kill other animals for their fur and skin, there is little that can stop us. If we want to cut down a forest to create a farm or a city, the decision is pretty much up to us.
We are beginning to see that what we want to do isn't necessarily good for the Earth--and its citizens.

For example:
We cut down millions of acres of rainforests each year, mostly to create farmland for raising beef. Some of the wood is turned into lumber, but most is simply burned. Because trees are natural storehouses of carbon dioxide, cutting down and burning trees releases CO2 into the atmosphere, which contributes to global warming.

Cutting down the rainforests destroys thousands of plants, animals, and insects that can help humans. Scientists estimate that between 5 million and 80 million species live in rainforests. As many as 6,000 species are forever lost every year because of logging.

Many other species around the world are endangered, mostly due to human activity, such as building roads and cities. Some are threatened because we consider them valuable or attractive. Elephants are killed for their tusks; whales are hunted for the oils in their flesh. Some plants are threatened when they are taken from the wild and sold to plant lovers. If these species are not protected, they can become extinct. Extinction is natural--since the beginning of time, millions of species have disappeared. But since humans appeared on earth (we are relative latecomers), the rate of extinction has speeded up.

What Can You Do?
First, you can encourage your parents not to buy furs, ivory, corals, and other products made from endangered species. You can also avoid certain pets that were bred in captivity. Investigate the rest of this site to learn how to adopt an endangered animal and other ways to get involved to save your Earth!

Take the time!

It is all about saving the animals, and you can make a difference.
So the next time you go for a walk, or go to the park with some friends, or a day at the beach with your family, take the time to help the earth. Take 10 minutes and look around the beautiful area around you that you are enjoying, and think about all the animals who live there, in the ground, or in a tree or by the stream.
These animals live here day after day, and you would not just drop your garbage on the floor of your best friends home, so don't do it here! Make sure your garbage is picked up and tossed where it belongs, in a barbage bin where animals can not get at it. Then look around and see if there is any more garbage that you can also pick up, this will make you a hero. bear_thumb.gif For everything you pick up, is one more item that will not end up blowing into the water.

There's garbage in the ocean. There's litter on the beach. There's cans by the streams. There's plastic bags in the creeks. This is serious, lots of animals live in the water, that ends up in the ocean.

Floating plastic can look like food to ocean animals, which swallow them and then die. Even birds get into trouble when they mistake little bits of plastic for food and choke on them.

So be that hero, and take the time to look around, and pick up that garbage that can float away, and safe a life. bear_thumb.gif

Other things to think about, never leave glass jars laying around - small creatures can get their heads stuck in them. This goes for those plastic six-pack rings that hold together your canned soda. Birds, fish and other animals can get caught in the rings that can cause them death. Sea gulls will not see them in the water when they dive into the water looking for fish, and by then it is too late when they get a ring caught around their necks. Or a fish that is swimming though a ring that they can not pass through. So save them, cut the rings of each circle with a scissor before you toss them out. Thank you.

If you go fishing, never throw fishing line in the water, or leave it behind on the grass.

Make it a game and give everyone a garbage bag to fill up. Or join in a cleanup program at your school, park or home area. If there is not one available - start one, you can do it! And if you need more help and ideas then just ask us.

Thank you bear_original.gif

Protect Our Animals!

Every creature on this Earth deserves to have a good life. bear_original.gif

Sometimes we can help this beautiful chain of nature, from the small insect to the large elephant. Everyone has a special place in the world, and need to live together.

It does make a difference to protect all animals, and it does make a difference to the change of the Earth when animals disappear.

Find out what animals live in your state, and if there are any in danger of disappearing. There could be different organizations that you can join and help out.

There could be a zoo adoption program.

Or check out animal shelters to see if they could use your help.

You can also go online to find out more information about an animal that might be interesting to you and learn more about it.
