Visit the U.S. Department of Energy's Home Energy Audit page for a detailed do-it-yourself. The Department of Energy also offers tips on finding a qualified contractor to perform the audit for you.

And if the appliance is off or not in use, unplug it from the wall, you would be surprised to know that energy is still being used. Example: check out your phone's battery charger after you remove your phone and leave the charger plugged in, it will still be warm to the touch when you come back to plug your phone in again.
