Fight Global Warming: Eat Organic

Conventional farming depletes soil carbon, preventing the soil from absorbing carbon dioxide.

What Can You Do?

Buy organic! A bit like the carbon offsets of agriculture, organic farming not only consumes 37 percent less energy than conventional farming, but in one year, an acre of organic crop soil will pull up to 7,000 pounds of CO2 from the atmosphere, according to the Rodale Institute. That's more than half of the average vehicle's total emissions over the course of a year. So while the premiums we often pay for organic food can feel extravagant, the benefits are priceless.

Or how about growing your own.

Sure not everyone has the land for planting a mini farm in your back yard, but there are other ways to do it.

Save some space by planting one type of seed that goes above ground next to a row that would grow under ground. Example the tomato's fruit grows up and carrot grows under the ground.

A lot of items can be planted in pots and flower boxes too. If your only planting for yourself you only need one or two of each type of plant.

You could also plant in a group and share, for example: Joe will plant tomatoes, and Mary will plant onions and Kathy will plant snow peas. Then when it comes time to harvest you divide the stuff between the three and now everyone has three types of veggies instead of just one.

Besides there is nothing that will make you feel so proud as you plant your seeds and watch them grown, and then enjoy eating them. bear_original.gif
