Ingredients ::
- 3/4 cup shortening (with part butter for better taste)
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2-1/2 cups flour (do not use self rising flour in this recipe)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg yolk
- 1/4 teaspoon water
Makes: about 4 dozen cookies
Extra supplies needed:
cookie cutters
tiny bowls and a paint brush for each food color that will be used.
Adult note:
You may want to make the dough for little children and just let them have fun painting the.
You may also want to make more of the egg-water mixture if there are a lot of children.
Step 1. In a large bowl, mix well with a spoon, shortening, sugar, 2 eggs, and vanilla.
Step 2. Add flour, baking powder, salt slowly as you blend them together in the large bowl mixture.
Step 3. Cover the dough or put into a plastic bag and chill for at least 1 hour.
Step 4. In a small bowl with a fork, 1 egg yolk and water. Divide this mixture among the tiny bowls. Add a few drops of each food color in a different bowl. Now your paints are ready. (if paint thickens, just add a few drops of water)
Step 5. Roll chilled dough to 1/8 inch thick on a lightly floured board. Cut with cookie cutters or make your own interesting shapes. Then place them on a baking sheet, that is not greased. Roll out the dough again to make more cookies until there is enough on the baking sheet to cook.
Step 6. Paint your cookies.
Step 7. Cookies are ready to go into the oven to bake for 6 to 8 minutes or until light brown on the edges. (you should have an adult around when using an oven for safety, and use an oven mitt)
Step 8. When cookies are done cooking, transfer them to a wire rack to cool, before eating them.
Step 9. Enjoy eating your work of art cookies and share them.
