Food can't fight off a cold before it hits. But certain foods will help bolster your body's defenses. Beta-glucans enhance killer-cell function. Get them from mushrooms, oats, and flax. Onions are potent antibacterial and antimicrobial agents, while the sulfurous compounds in plants like bok choi, broccoli, and cabbage chow through cancer cells in lab studies-that can't hurt. And a red pepper offers three times more vitamin C than an orange. For a boost, have some low-fat yogurt with your salad; the bacteria help keep your immune system primed.
